Thoughts on a Glock 9mm (compact) vs larger caliber? Looking for a target shooting & home protection pistol. Want my wife to be able to shoot it too...she's new to guns, so was thinking about low recoil.
The 9mm, with good defensive ammo (the expensive stuff) is a fine self defense handgun caliber. Look at Federal, Cor-Bon, Remington, and a few others for effective ammunition. You want bullets in the 124-127 Grain, hollow point, range.
The 9mm is much cheaper on ammo and you NEED to practice to be proficient with any firearm and especially so with a handgun. Other calibers like the .40 and .45 do have a margin of better performance but there are tradeoffs. Those include increased recoil and less capacity. I would not feel undergunned with any of these calibers (although I would still want to fight with a long gun, or have someone with a long gun back me up).
Bottom line, Glock 19, great gun, simple gun, good caliber. Practice with the cheap stuff, shoot the expensive stuff occasionally, and keep the expensive stuff for self defense.
